When I started playing Dungeons & Dragons, it was in second edition, Ravenloft Campaign. I remember playing an adventure where it was a small village in the snow, where a werewolf was killing villagers, and the innkeeper was a vampire. RAVENLOFT ADVENTURES A.K.A. Religion in Ravenloft

Despite being a Gothic Horror setting, or perhaps because of it, the Demiplane of Dread has many different faiths and religions scattered throughout its misty realms. Most are fairly unimportant, localized and restricted in worship to only those native to certain domains, but a handful have achieved greater power and spread their influence beyond the realms of their birth.

Outlanders who come to Ravenloft may worship their own gods, but they will receive no word or blessing from them. Indeed, nobody hears the words of the gods here in the Dread Domains. The Dark Powers block any such divine words, but it is possible still to gain divine intervention by belief. However, only those religions that gain enough adherents can actually grant clerical domains and spells. How this happens is anyone’s guess (it could just be the Dark Powers playing at acting as gods), but it can be a rather traumatic event for an outlander cleric to lose all their powers, only to have to find a new faith to dedicate themselves to.

D&d Ravenloft Adventures

Note: Many believe that the gods of Ravenloft are actually outworlder deities trying to press their influence against the Dark Powers. The Morninglord and Lawgiver resemble Faerunian deities Lathander and Bane, while the Lady of Repose and the Eternal Order appear to be Wee Jas and Nerull, respectively. Even the Thundering God appears to be an aspect of the god Odin, or Annam All-Father. Many people bring their religions with them – even if their gods do not respond to them – and perhaps that is the origin for all religions in Ravenloft.
